While it may feel that your contribution is small and won’t add up, it does. Every view, each share, a single dollar donated helps to create awareness, change hearts and minds, and take us one step forward. There is no contribution that is too small. Together, they really make a big difference.
I was only 15 years old when I was sold to the madam. I was innocent then. My parents were tricked by a neighbour into thinking I’d be working at a restaurant as a waitress in the city. I wanted to help my family. I was willing to work. But this is not what followed. After walking through the jungle and crossing the border on a night boat, a van took me to a bad place – a place where girls like me were sold like animals to the owner. They abused me and tortured me for days until I had nothing left to give. Every night I was with different men – seven days a week, 365 days a year. Now at 18, my body is frail from the illnesses. I feel completely empty inside.
I was an orphan, adopted by a family who made me work very hard. They did not let me go to school. One day the family left, leaving me on the streets to fend for myself. I was only 10 years old. I boarded a bus to reach another town and searched for work. I was made to carry bucket-loads of water up 4 floors and not given any medicine when I fell sick. I was mistreated and abused. I ran away. The next house was worse. I was sexually abused by another male servant and my owners suggested marriage with the man who abused me. I ran away again. At 15 I found help with an NGO. I wish the help would have come sooner.
